Australia’s National Level-Based Ratings

Australia’s National Level-Based Ratings

Find out where you stack up against all the other squash players in the country, this month and at any time since September 2022.

The Squash Australia National Level-Based Ratings are powered by SquashLevels and include all the players who have their country set to Australia and who have results recorded on SquashLevels in the six months prior to the ranking period selected.

The ratings shown are each player’s SquashLevels level at the start of the selected month with additional damping from averaging their level over their last four results.

A full explanation of how SquashLevels calculates levels is available on their FAQ page.

Usage

The ratings page defaults to showing all Australian players with the pros at the top, indicated by the PSA logo against their name. The default period selected is the current month and the levels shown are those at the start of the month, averaged over approximately four match results

You can select to show any month since September 2022 and filter the ratings by age group and/or gender. Just click on the search filters block to open up the selection to choose your filters.

You can find any player in Australia using the search bar. Just enter their name (or parts of their name) and select them from the names listed. Their position will then be shown with their name highlighted.

If you click on a player, it will take you to that player's profile on SquashLevels which shows you their current level, ratings and results stats, matches and so on depending on your membership level of SquashLevels. From here, you can explore the SquashLevels site.

Juniors

In order to appear in the junior level-based ratings, you must have been within the age group at the time (note, for instance, that U15s will be included in the U17s and U19s ratings).

Please note that the Junior Level-Based Ratings are different to the Junior Tournament Rankings.

Masters

In order to appear in the masters level-based ratings, you must have been old enough at the time (note, for instance, that O50s will be included in the O35s and O40s ratings). If you're not showing in the age group you would expect then we may not have your DoB recorded. You can update/correct that directly via your player profile page on SquashLevels.

FAQ

How do these ratings compare with the previous SportyHQ generated ratings?

SportyHQ is a comprehensive tournament, league and membership management system and has its own ranking system based on 'SportyHQ points'. For those familiar with SportyHQ points and wondering how they compare with SquashLevels here's a summary of the main differences:

  • SportyHQ points are based on the 'matrix' system which uses game scores and their opponent's SportyHQ points value to decide if they played better or worse than expected. Points are awarded based on a matrix and are additive. You can get anything up to a 30 point adjustment from a match though it's typically much less than that - 1 to 5 is common, 10 is quite significant.
  • SquashLevels uses points scores as well as games scores for greater accuracy and a more mathematical approach to a player's level such that someone playing twice as well will have a level that is twice as high. So levels are more of a ratio than additive. I.e. a 2000 level player will be playing twice as well as a 1000 player whereas the equivalent for SportyHQ is a difference of around 275 SportyHQ points. This also allows results prediction as you'd expect someone with twice the level to win their games by around 15-7... Of course, most humans are less predictable than that but it's good fun!
  • As SquashLevels takes points scores into account it is more responsive and dynamic than the SportyHQ points value. This allows for fast moving players such as juniors or those just simply those getting better quickly. This also requires that we take player behaviour into account such as when a good player gives their lesser opponent a runaround.
  • When there are lots of players with similar SportyHQ ranking points or even similar Levels (<10% difference) they will change often. In fact, it wouldn't take much of a change for players with similar ranking points to completely change the order of the rankings entirely. As humans, we vary around 10-20% per match, which is reflected in the dynamic SquashLevels system. This leads to an important point about rankings when you are looking at clusters of players with a very similar level - don't be too black and white on actual position as it is likely to change from match to match.
  • A key part of the SquashLevels algorithm is calibration. This compares pools of players such as between clubs, regions and even countries and makes continued small adjustments to ensure that a 1000 player in one club or region is equivalent to a 1000 player in another club or region. This is performed globally and a unique feature of SquashLevels.

More information on this can be found within the SquashLevels FAQ.

What is the difference between the Junior Level-Based Ratings and the Junior Tournament Rankings?

The Junior Level Based Ratings features all junior players who have their country set to Australia and who have results recorded on SquashLevels in the six months prior to the ranking period selected, regardless of the match type. This is represented as a level.

The Junior Tournament Rankings feature all qualifying juniors. To qualify you must have played in at least one Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum tournament in the last 12 months. These tournaments are designed to to offer ranking points across four levels of tournaments; Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. All tournaments are ranked nationally on a scale for ages U19, U17, U15, U13 and U11. Find out more about the Junior Tournament Rankings here.

Is there an advantage to having more results on SquashLevels?

SquashLevels measures playing level based on results and opponent level. If you have more results it should be more accurate but there's no accumulation of points or level and the number of matches you've played doesn't increase your level.

Why are these ratings different to what I am seeing on SquashLevels?

The ratings are based on the same level calculations but what you see on SquashLevels is your current playing level, which is dynamic and changes daily. The Squash Australia ratings are static for the month, taken at the beginning of the month selected and are an average of your last four levels.

Which matches count towards my rating?

All matches recorded on SquashLevels affect your level but they are weighted so that the most important matches count more:

Informal club matches: 40%
Club league/box matches: 50%
Pennant matches: 75%
Tournaments: 100%

With the averaging over several matches, the Squash Australia ratings will be mostly affected by the most important matches that each player has played.

What does the PSA logo indicate?

This logo represents that the player has played on the PSA tour in the last 12 months. Sometimes a player will actively retire and that may then allow us to remove the PSA logo more quickly.
